![]() ![]() In the end I liked Mogworld more, but both were fun enough for me to look forward to the next Yahtzee novel. Jam, on the other hand, is a fairly straight apocalypse-survivor story, with only one major mystery that is central to most apocalypse stories: How did this happen? Jam does, however, have a, quite hilarious, ironic cult of forumites (probably based on 4chan) going for it. Some of the book is also told through emails and memos. ![]() Mogworld is more complex, simply because it deals with different realities, and how they effect each other. I found Mogworld funnier by far, probably because the subject matter makes it easier for Yahtzee to write jokes about. Also, unsurprisingly, Yahtzee's characters tend to be either arrogant assholes, bumbling idiots or a combination of both and, in my opinion, he isn't writing women well. I found that both drag a bit towards the end - Mogworld more so than Jam. They're both fun and I enjoyed them a lot. ![]() I've listened to both books in the unabridged audio version (read by Yahtzee himself). ![]()

![]() ![]() Not least because Joyce had a habit of helping himself to advances from the till. ![]() Its publication brought Joyce, Beach and Shakespeare and Company worldwide fame but almost dragged the bookshop under in the process. These included Harriet Weaver’s Egoist, which had been the first to publish work by Joyce. It was also the major source of distribution for the avant-garde ‘little magazines’ which would be the first place of publication for some of the most important poets, novelists and critics in the early decades of the 20th Century. The first combined English language bookshop and lending library in Paris, it provided unprecedented access to Anglo-American literature for a cash-strapped post-war population who had little money to buy books. What are the best first lines in fiction? Together with Monnier, her lifelong personal and professional partner whose own store, La Maison des Amis des Livres, was a meeting place for the leading men of French letters, Beach would befriend and nurture two generations of American, Anglo-Irish and French writers including André Gide, Paul Valéry, TS Eliot, Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway and, of course, James Joyce. “My loves were Adrienne Monnier and James Joyce and Shakespeare and Company,” wrote Sylvia Beach, whose legendary Parisian bookstore first opened its doors 100 years ago this month. ![]() ![]() But as much as he’d like to hate Vikash, Kyle finds himself oddly drawn to him, their non-abilities meshing in unexpected ways. There is a natural flow to the plot, as chapters alternate from the present day to the past with readers simultaneously following Devon’s journey in the present day, whilst also learning about her past and the history of the Families. ![]() Born into the North Yorkshire based, Fairweather Family, Devon is a book eater – a supernatural humanoid being, who consumes books as sustenance and in doing so takes on their contents and knowledge. Gorgeously written, the concept of The Book Eaters is so unique as to verge on the absurd, and yet, WOW, does its originality work.įittingly, England serves as the backdrop for the at times, pompous and old-fashioned nature of the six remaining book eater Families, who form the core of The Book Eaters narrative. Hook, line, and sinker, this is a book that will for sure – despite being only half way through the year – be in the top echelons of my most loved books of 2022. ![]() ![]() The title grabbed my attention, the synopsis sealed the deal and, the rest as they say, is history. To protect the last Janacek, the infant Tatiana, he spirits her away to America and out of the Stomboloffs’ reach. When the feud has wiped out most of the Janacek line, a nobleman loyal to the royal family assumes the throne. It’s an enjoyable (if slightly silly) indulgence since it allows Lindsey to create the dramatic backstory of a blood feud between two aristocratic clans: the Janaceks and the Stomboloffs. Cardinia is pure invention, a vaguely Eastern European figment of the author’s imagination. Cardinia? Don’t spend too much time trying to find it on a map. The princess in question is Tatiana Janacek, the sole surviving member of the Janacek clan and heir to the Cardinian throne. Johanna Lindsey’s Once A Princess is old-fashioned, fairy tale fun. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After this is done, it demonstrates how dinosaurs really eat their food politely. ![]() How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food by Jane Yolen and Mark Teaque goes through all the sceniros about how dinosaurs could eat their food rudely. If their picture reflects a bad choice or bad behavior, then I would ask them to draw me another picture or write how they would change it to make it a good choice. Some options would be for students to draw the good behaviors discussed in the book, write about their experiences in the lunch room or draw a picture. I would start it on a Monday and then read it everyday before lunch as a reminder and also as way to start a mini lesson. It's a cute book, but my hope would be that after discussing it further and really going into detail on the expectations of the whole class that we may have some of those good behaviors roll-over into their lunchtime. All the impolite behaviors described in the book are what I am currently dealing with so I would more than likely read this book about half and hour before lunch as a read aloud, so we could read the book and then discuss the different behaviors described in the book. They have had a very difficult time in the lunchroom and could use the gentle reminder on what the expectations are of them in the lunchroom. I hate to admit it, but this would most definitely be a perfect book to read to my K1 class. ![]() ![]() ![]() I liked this book, but my biggest criticism is that it’s a simple and empowering idea laid out in a lengthy and more complicated format than it has to be.
